Belgian Journalists Attacked in Beirut
Belgian journalists Robin Ramaekers and Stijn De Smet were assaulted in Beirut while covering a bombing. Despite the violent attack, both journalists are determined to continue their work. Belgian authorities are coordinating efforts to evacuate them to safety as soon as possible.
The Attack
On Wednesday night, while reporting on a bombing in Beirut, Robin Ramaekers and cameraman Stijn De Smet were attacked by a group of men. The attackers accused them of being spies for Israel. Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib confirmed that plans are in motion to bring the journalists home. Ramaekers and De Smet sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical care.
Why They Were Targeted
The two VTM journalists were in Beirut to report on the aftermath of a bombing in the city center. Despite wearing clearly marked press vests, they were ambushed by approximately 20 men who accused them of espionage. Stijn De Smet was shot twice in the leg, while Robin Ramaekers was taken hostage, beaten, and interrogated for hours.
A Traumatic Experience
Ramaekers revealed that it took nearly 20 hours for him and De Smet to reunite after the attack. De Smet’s passport and phone were damaged by bullets, while Ramaekers’ shoes were cut open in a search for evidence. Both journalists are currently in a secure location awaiting evacuation. Despite the horrific ordeal, Ramaekers declared their intent to return to Beirut to continue their reporting.
Determined to Return
Though deeply traumatized, the journalists expressed their commitment to returning and finishing their work in Beirut. Their determination, despite the attack, highlights their dedication to delivering the truth in conflict zones.
